BRITISH PERIOD - KING EDWARD VII One Rupee Coin
The Edward VII series of coins of India are dated 1903-1910. No Gold coins were issued during the reign of Edward VII. There are four silver coins (Rupee, 1/2 Rupee, 1/4 Rupee and 2 Annas) and three copper coins (1/4 Anna, 1/2 Pice and 1/12 Anna). A cupro-nickel 1 Anna coin was introduced in 1906.
Coinage of Queen Victoria had the Queen's bust facing left, following the British practice of making the effigies of successive sovereigns face opposite directions, the coins of Edward showed the king facing right.
On 01 Aug,1906, the copper coins were replace by bronze issues with the same obverse and reverse designs but a thinner plancet due to the rising international prices of copper. The 1906 coins come in both varieties.
Another special feature of the coinage of this period was that,in all the silver coins the inscription was in both English and Persian, compared to Victoria coins that showed only English. In 1 anna cupro-nickel coin, the value was shown in five languages- English, Persian, Hindi, Bengali and Telugu.
There were over 263 million of these Indian 1 rupee coins featuring King Edward VII (1901-10) minted at Bombay and Calcutta. It contains .3438 of an ounce of silver. There is no mint mark for Calcutta. The Bombay issues have a small incuse "B" (the 1903 Rupee also has a raised "B" variety). The "B" mint mark can be impossible to see but a "dot" on the stem of the lotus-bud (lower right on reverse) is a more prominent mark.

BRITISH PERIOD - ONE RUPEE COIN
VICTORIA EMPRESS ONE RUPEE COIN SILVER
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837, and the first Empress of India from 1 May 1876, until her death on 22 January 1901. Her reign lasted sixty-three years and seven months, longer than that of any other British monarch.
The Victorian era was at the height of the Industrial Revolution, a period of significant social, economic, and technological change in the United Kingdom. Victoria's reign was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire and during the period it reached its zenith, becoming the formidable Global Power of the time.
Reign - 20 Jun 1837 - 22 Jan1901
Coronation - 28 June 1838
Predecessor - William IV
Successor - Edward VII
On 24 May 1837 Victoria turned 18, meaning that a regency would not be necessary. Four weeks later, Victoria was awoken by her mother to find that at 12 minutes past 2 a.m. on 20 June 1837, William IV had died from heart failure at the age of seventy-one. Victoria was now Queen of the United Kingdom.
The Queen married her first cousin, Prince Albert on 10 February 1840, at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace; four days before, Victoria granted her husband, who was born the same year as herself, the style His Royal Highness.
In 1887, the United Kingdom celebrated Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Victoria marked the fiftieth anniversary of her accession, 20 June 1887, with a banquet to which fifty European kings and princes were invited.
On 22 September 1896, Victoria surpassed George III as the longest reigning monarch in English, Scottish, and British history.
She died on the Isle of Wight, from a cerebral hemorrhage on 22 January 1901, at the age of 81.Victoria had reigned for a total of 63 years, seven months and two days — the longest reign in British history. She was buried at Windsor beside Prince Albert, in the Frogmore Royal Mausoleum, which she had built for their final resting place. Above the Mausoleum door are inscribed Victoria's words:

5 RUPEE COIN - SAINT ALPHONSA
St. Alphonsa Muttathupandathu was a nun from a remote village in Kerala (Southwestern India) who was known for her holiness during a lifetime of extreme physical suffering. She was born on August 19, 1910, and passed away 62 years ago.
At a young age, St. Alphonsa was determined to become a nun after reading the lives of the saints. At age 14, she deliberately burned her foot so that her disfigurement would prevent an arranged marriage. At age 17, St. Alphonsa joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation.
According the the Catholic News Service, she taught for a time, but was soon confined to her convent because of a succession of illnesses, including typhoid fever, pneumonia, skin infections and a wasting disease. At the same time, her life was marked by periods of great spiritual joy.
Releasing the commemorative coin in Rs 5 denomination bearing the engraving of the saint and declaring the birth centenary celebrations on, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee remarked that the thoughts on Saint Alphonsa’s noble spirit and spiritual strength transcended across religions, geographic borders and all people. Observing that the saint had, in her short life of 36 years, been a fountain of selfless service, compassion and love, the minister said that Bharananganam, where she had lived most part of her life as a nun in the Clarist Order of St Francis of Assisi, now embodies lessons on religious harmony not only for Kerala, but the whole country.“St Alphonsa embodies the noble spirit and her life symbolises spirituality.
